Buckingham MP and speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow played a series of exhibition matches at Buckingham Tennis Club in Chandos Park last Friday evening.
John, who is the club’s honorary president, played a singles match against 18-year-old Young Player of the Year Ollie Davis. Despite a valiant effort and some ace serves by Ollie, John’s experience prevailed as he won 6-2.
This was followed by mixed doubles and men’s doubles matches involving finalists from the club’s tournaments last year. John was partnered by Liliana Dickmann-Pena in the mixed doubles against Keira Ainsworth and Graham Baugh. In a nailbiting match that swung back and forth, John and Liliana were eventually victorious.
The men’s doubles was between John, partnered by Stuart Coughlan, against Simon Thompson and David Barrett.
Despite the long, hard-hitting rallies and some very close games, John and Stuart won comfortably by 6-1, making it an evening of triple victory for John.
Afterwards John presented awards to committee members Alison Powles, Anthony Green and Robert Rowlands for their outstanding work for the club over the last year.
The club is holding an open day from noon to 4pm on Sunday, July 3. Members of the public and their children can try playing tennis for free, or talk to current members about joining. Visit www.buckinghamtennis.net
