Cancer Research UK is urging people to find at least six people they want to spend the night with – all in a good cause.
The charity is encouraging friends, families, colleagues and clubs to get together and enter Buckingham’s Relay For Life, a unique celebration of life and hope which unites communities to help beat over 200 types of cancer.
Teams of between six and 15 people, of all ages and all levels of fitness, are needed to take part at Bourton Meadow Academy over the weekend of July 9 and 10.
Participants are asked to raise as much money as possible in the months leading up to the Relay, through fundraising activities and securing donations.
Cancer Research UK Relay for Life volunteers Linda Woodham, Aimee Britton and Sophie Britton set up their stall in Buckingham town centre last Saturday, to tell people about the event, which takes place on alternate years.
And the team will be holding a meeting for prospective teams at 7.30pm on Thursday, January 28, at the Old Gaol.
Aimee Britton, volunteer chairman of Buckingham Relay For Life, said: “Relay For Life is a great way to spend time with your friends, family and colleagues while raising money for a truly worthwhile cause.”
During the Relay itself, team members take it in turns to walk round a track while everyone else enjoys a wide range of fun activities on offer.
As Relay For Life is non-stop through the night, those team members not on the track can take turns to rest, eat or sleep in their nearby tents.
As dusk falls, the atmosphere quietens as the Candle of Hope ceremony begins.
This is the most poignant part of Relay For Life, when specially made Candle of Hope bags decorated with messages in memory or in celebration of loved ones are filled with sand and lit up with candles around the school field.
This is the sixth time Relay For Life has taken place in Buckingham.
Aimee said: “More than one in three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives. Taking part in Relay For Life is about being part of a community united in the belief that it can make a difference and help beat cancer.”
