Massive increase demand for food

Towcester Food Bank volunteers have thanked all the generous people who donated a huge amount of groceries so local people in need did not go hungry over the Christmas period.

Even though the food bank was closed over the public holidays, 419 local people received supplies of groceries during December. This included 197 children.

Volunteers are unable to say why there has been such an increase in demand, but some Towcester charities provided leaflets about the food bank’s activities with their Christmas gifts to local people, and this may have contributed to the big increase in applications for help.

The vast majority of the food bank’s clients are people on low incomes who are finding life a bit of a struggle.

As food bank stocks were greatly depleted over Christmastime, volunteers now urgently need what they call “ordinary food” to give people.

Further details can be found on www.towcester.foodbank.org.uk or call 07724 832043 during the food bank’s opening hours – Mondays and Thursdays from noon to 2pm.

Clients and donors can also call in to the food bank, which is in the Towcester Youth Coffee House, in Bransons Lane.
