Law and order was the focus for outgoing High Sheriff

Going out on the beat with police officers and visiting the county’s prisons are two of the most rewarding things the High Sheriff has done during his year in office.

Sir Stuart Hampson steps down from his position as the Queen’s representative for law and order in the county on Tuesday.

On that day the new High Sheriff Joe Barclay will take office at a special ceremony in Aylesbury Crown Court.

Sir Stuart said: “It’s been a very rewarding and fulfilling year. There is no brief for the role, you can play it whatever way you want. I have focused on the law and order brief and spent a lot of time with the police visiting police stations.”

Sir Stuart also joined two police officers on a late night beat just before Christmas, and watched as the pubs emptied on a cold, wet and windy evening.

He also visited all four prisons in the county, at Aylesbury, Springhill, Grendon Underwood and Wood Hill in Milton Keynes.

There were many lighter moments during the year, including taking part in the abseil down Bucks County Council tower and the Kop Hill climb.

He said: “Leaping off a 13 storey building was a highlight and great fun. I also enjoyed the Kop Hill climb where I drove a 1955 Jaguar and raised money for charity by auctioning the passenger seat.”
