Museum is ‘batty’ about conservation

Bat roosting spots have been maintained as part of the Canal Musuem at Stoke Bruerne refurbishment.

A bat assessment carried out before internal works began did not reveal any evidence of bats currently living in the roof space. But in a bid to be sympathetic to the protected species roost access points have been left open at the museum building, which is managed by the Canal and River Trust.

Waterside roosts like the canal museum are ideal habitat for bats as they need access to water and feed on the insects which also make the canals their home.

The museum, which follows the history of Britain’s canals and the people who worked on them, will re-open on April 12 for the summer season.
