Falling shopper numbers could lead to market’s closure

Brackley’s Country Market faces closure if it fails to drum up more support, despite trading for 40 years next year.

The market, which was formerly known as the WI Market, now operates as a co-operative with shareholders.

Manager Diane Jones said: “I think it’s just the times as much as anything else. People can’t afford to buy a £5 cake at our market when they get can it for £1.50 at Tesco. We’re finding it tough to get footfall through the door because we can’t afford to advertise and a lot of people don’t know we are here.” The market sells a variety of items including plants, in season fruit and vegetables, meat, cards, jewellery and babywear.

The market is open 8.30am to 11am on Fridays at the WI and Guide Hall on Manor Road.
