Acclaimed professional actor James Clarkson is performing a celebration of the life and mind of the poet John Donne at St Mary’s Church, Addington, on Friday, May 10.
Entitled The Monarch Of Wit, the 50-minute monologue begins at 8pm, preceded by refreshments from 7.30pm.
Lover, poet, and dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, Donne was a fascinating and complex man whose career and thought echo many issues of our time.
The play explores his witty and brilliant Metaphysical poems, intimate letters, thundering sermons and profound and moving meditations.
It includes his early life as a clever young love poet in 1590s London, his disastrous marriage, his struggles with poverty and obscurity, his ordination, preaching, turbulent relationship with God and his preparation for death.
